Activity Details
Whether you’re paddling calmly on the canals or Amsterdam or taking part in friendly challenges and group exercises, SUP naturally encourages teamwork, communication, and a positive group dynamic
When you join a group SUP session, your clinic will typically follow this format:
Preparation: We’ll provide all the necessary equipment for stand-up paddleboarding. You can get changed in our facilities, and lockers are available to store your valuables safely.
Introduction: One of our experienced instructors will guide you through the equipment, safety guidelines, and basic SUP techniques before you head out on the water.
On the water: You can choose to paddle independently or go out with a guide, who can show you around and share insights about the surroundings. Sessions also take place at the Nieuwe Meer, where you’ll enjoy the scenic nature of the Amsterdamse Bos.
Wrap-up: After returning, you can change back into your clothes and relax. Food and beverage packages can be pre-arranged.
Mastering the Glide: A Beginner’s Guide to SUP
1. The Launch (The Dry Start)
We begin in shallow, knee-deep water. Instead of trying to stand immediately, you’ll start in a kneeling position in the center of the board. This lowers your center of gravity and allows you to feel how the board reacts to the water’s movement without the pressure of balancing upright.
2. The Transition (The “Rise”)
Once you feel the board stabilize, it’s time to stand. The secret? Keep your eyes on the horizon. Looking down at your feet often leads to a wobble. Place your hands on the sides of the board, bring your feet up one at a time to where your knees were, and rise in one smooth motion—keeping a slight bend in your knees to act as natural shock absorbers.
3. The Power Source (Paddle Technique)
A common mistake is paddling only with your arms. To move efficiently, think of your paddle as a lever and your core as the engine. You’ll reach forward, plant the blade fully in the water, and pull your body past the paddle. This uses your larger back and stomach muscles, meaning you can go further without getting tired.
4. Mastering Direction (The Sweep)
Want to turn? It’s all about the “Sweep Stroke.” By drawing a wide semi-circle in the water with your paddle—moving from the nose of the board all the way to the tail—you can rotate the board almost on a dime.
5. Embracing the “Splash”
Falling is just a part of the learning curve! Our boards are incredibly stable, but if you do lose your balance, the goal is to fall away from the board into the clear water. Thanks to your ankle leash, your board will be right there waiting for you to hop back on and try again.
