About this Project

A leading manufacturer of visual display and presentation products was looking to reward and energise their EMEA sales team with an activity that was competitive, memorable, and set apart from the usual corporate outing. The brief was clear: something fun, something team-driven, and somewhere that felt like a genuine discovery rather than a staged event. The destination needed to be close to Amsterdam, yet offer a more intimate and characterful atmosphere. Haarlem — with its historic canal-lined streets, independent spirit, and unhurried pace — was the natural choice.

The Challenge

Designing an activity for a high-performing international sales team is never straightforward. The group needed to be engaged mentally, not just physically. The experience had to balance competition with camaraderie, structure with spontaneity, and corporate purpose with genuine enjoyment. On top of that, the client had a specific request: the activity should weave in the history and architectural heritage of Haarlem, turning the city itself into the centrepiece of the programme.

The Solution

SkyMar DMC was involved in the conception of a fully customized city quest challenge that transformed Haarlem’s historic city centre into a live, interactive playing field. Each team was handed a carefully crafted scavenger hunt package featuring a series of challenges tied to the city’s most interesting and historically significant landmarks. To add a creative and tangible element, every team was equipped with a Polaroid camera — tasked with photographing completed challenges as evidence, the cameras also became an unexpected source of laughter, creativity, and friendly rivalry throughout the afternoon.
The pause points turned out to be some of the most talked-about moments of the day — the atmosphere was so warm and the conversations so engaging that several teams lingered far longer than anticipated, lost in discussion and clearly in no rush to move on. It was exactly the kind of unscripted, human moment that no programme document can plan for — and a strong sign that the experience had hit the right note.

On the Ground Support

To ensure the activity ran smoothly despite the natural unpredictability of a city-wide scavenger hunt, a team of dedicated hostesses was stationed and reachable throughout. Whether a team needed directional guidance, a hint, or simply reassurance that they were still in the running, support was always close at hand. This allowed participants to stay fully immersed in the experience without anxiety, and ensured that no team was left behind — literally or figuratively.

The Finale

After three hours of exploring, competing, and connecting, all teams converged at a carefully selected Haarlem restaurant, where they were welcomed with a well-earned round of drinks on the terrace. The energy was high, the stories were already flowing, and the competitive spirit had given way to a shared sense of achievement. The group then moved inside for a three-course dinner — a relaxed, celebratory setting in which the results were finally revealed. The winning teams were announced to well-deserved applause, and prizes were awarded with genuine ceremony. In a particularly thoughtful touch, the team that finished last also received a prize — a gesture that drew laughter, warmth, and perhaps the biggest cheer of the evening. By the end of the night, it was clear that everyone had not only had a great time, but had left with stronger connections and a renewed team spirit.

Client Review

“The work done by all organizers and vendors went beyond and above. It was well executed and everyone had an amazing time connecting and getting to know each other. Definitely, we’ll do this again!” – Vivitek

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can you organise a customised scavenger hunt outside of Amsterdam?
Yes. While Amsterdam is a popular choice for corporate activities, SkyMar DMC regularly designs bespoke programmes in cities and destinations across the Netherlands. For this programme, we chose Haarlem specifically for its historic character, manageable scale, and proximity to Amsterdam — qualities that made it ideal for a city-wide scavenger hunt. We can design similar experiences in a range of Dutch cities depending on the group’s size, interests, and objectives.
How do you customise a scavenger hunt for a corporate group?
Every scavenger hunt we design is built around the client’s brief rather than an off-the-shelf template. For this programme, the client wanted an activity that was competitive, culturally enriching, and reflective of Haarlem’s history and architecture. We developed a bespoke challenge package tied to the city’s most significant landmarks, incorporated traditional Dutch food and drink stops, and provided Polaroid cameras to add a creative and tangible dimension to the competition. The format, route, duration, and difficulty level are all adjustable to suit the group.
How do you ensure participants don't get lost or fall behind during a city-wide activity?
On-the-ground support is built into every programme we run. For this scavenger hunt, we stationed a team of dedicated hostesses at key points throughout Haarlem, all reachable by phone throughout the activity. Their role was to provide directional guidance, offer hints where needed, and ensure that every team remained engaged and on course. No group was left to navigate the city entirely on their own.
Can a scavenger hunt be combined with dinner in the same evening?
Absolutely — and in our experience, this combination works particularly well. The competitive energy built up during the activity carries naturally into the dinner, giving the group a shared narrative to discuss, debate, and laugh about over the meal. For this programme, we concluded the scavenger hunt at a Haarlem restaurant where all teams were welcomed with drinks, followed by a three-course dinner during which the results were announced and prizes awarded. The transition from activity to dinner felt entirely seamless.
Do you provide prizes as part of the programme?
Yes, prize coordination can be included as part of the overall programme design. For this event, prizes were awarded not only to the winning teams but also — in a deliberately lighthearted touch — to the team that finished last. This small detail generated some of the biggest reactions of the evening and reinforced the inclusive, celebratory tone the client was looking for. We are happy to advise on prize selection and presentation format depending on the group culture and budget.
How far is Haarlem from Amsterdam and how do you handle transfers?
Haarlem is approximately 20 minutes from Amsterdam by train or road, making it an easy and practical choice for a day or evening programme. Depending on group size and preference, we can arrange coach transfers, private minibuses, or train travel, and manage all logistics including timing, boarding coordination, and return arrangements.
Can the scavenger hunt incorporate specific themes or company messaging?
Yes. The scavenger hunt format is well-suited to customisation beyond the destination itself. Challenges can be designed to reflect company values, product knowledge, or internal themes — turning the activity into something that serves both a team-building and a business purpose. For groups where cultural discovery is the priority, as it was in this case, the city’s own history and landmarks provide all the content needed.
