Activity Details

Whether you’re paddling calmly on the canals or Amsterdam or taking part in friendly challenges and group exercises, SUP naturally encourages teamwork, communication, and a positive group dynamic

When you join a group SUP session, your clinic will typically follow this format:

Preparation: We’ll provide all the necessary equipment for stand-up paddleboarding. You can get changed in our facilities, and lockers are available to store your valuables safely.

Introduction: One of our experienced instructors will guide you through the equipment, safety guidelines, and basic SUP techniques before you head out on the water.

On the water: You can choose to paddle independently or go out with a guide, who can show you around and share insights about the surroundings. Sessions also take place at the Nieuwe Meer, where you’ll enjoy the scenic nature of the Amsterdamse Bos.

Wrap-up: After returning, you can change back into your clothes and relax. Food and  beverage packages can be pre-arranged.

Mastering the Glide: A Beginner’s Guide to SUP

1. The Launch (The Dry Start)
We begin in shallow, knee-deep water. Instead of trying to stand immediately, you’ll start in a kneeling position in the center of the board. This lowers your center of gravity and allows you to feel how the board reacts to the water’s movement without the pressure of balancing upright.

2. The Transition (The “Rise”)
Once you feel the board stabilize, it’s time to stand. The secret? Keep your eyes on the horizon. Looking down at your feet often leads to a wobble. Place your hands on the sides of the board, bring your feet up one at a time to where your knees were, and rise in one smooth motion—keeping a slight bend in your knees to act as natural shock absorbers.

3. The Power Source (Paddle Technique)
A common mistake is paddling only with your arms. To move efficiently, think of your paddle as a lever and your core as the engine. You’ll reach forward, plant the blade fully in the water, and pull your body past the paddle. This uses your larger back and stomach muscles, meaning you can go further without getting tired.

4. Mastering Direction (The Sweep)
Want to turn? It’s all about the “Sweep Stroke.” By drawing a wide semi-circle in the water with your paddle—moving from the nose of the board all the way to the tail—you can rotate the board almost on a dime.

5. Embracing the “Splash”
Falling is just a part of the learning curve! Our boards are incredibly stable, but if you do lose your balance, the goal is to fall away from the board into the clear water. Thanks to your ankle leash, your board will be right there waiting for you to hop back on and try again.

Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) Frequently Asked Questions - FAQ

1. General Knowledge

What is Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP)?
SUP offers a “front-row seat” to the water. Unlike sitting in a kayak, standing gives you a vertical vantage point to see through the surface and spot marine life or underwater topography. It’s a meditative, rhythmic activity that slows down the world around you.
Will I get wet?
It’s a possibility, but not a guarantee! Our beginner boards are high-buoyancy “platforms” designed to stay level. Most of our clients stay dry from the waist up unless they decide to take a celebratory dip at the end of the session.
Is it actually a workout if I’m going slow?
Don’t let the relaxed pace fool you. To keep the board steady, your body performs hundreds of tiny “isostatic” contractions in your legs and midsection. It’s the ultimate “stealth fitness” activity—you’ll feel a healthy glow the next day without ever feeling like you were “grinding” at the gym.
How do you handle groups with different fitness levels?
That is the beauty of SUP. We can tailor the route to keep the group together. Stronger paddlers can do “loops” around the group, while those looking for a zen experience can drift at a leisurely pace. It’s the most inclusive way to get an entire corporate team on the water simultaneously.

2. Lessons & Experience

How long is a typical lesson?

Standard introductory sessions usually last 1 hour. This includes a land-based briefing followed by plenty of time in the water to find your balance. However, we ask participants to be there at least 15 minutes prior to the activity to get organized and sorted.

What should I bring?

We recommend bringing swimwear, sunscreen, a towel, and a change of clothes. You can also bring moisture-wicking layers and polarized sunglasses. We provide all necessary safety gear, including helmets and impact vests if you’re eFoiling.

Is Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP) safe?
Yes. Absolutely—safety is the foundation of every session. We view SUP as a “low-risk, high-reward” activity suitable for almost everyone. Here is how we ensure your peace of mind on the water. A reasonable swimming skill is necessary.

3. Corporate & Group Bookings

Is SUP good for large groups?
It’s excellent! Unlike more technical sports, everyone in a corporate group can participate at the same time. It’s a very social activity that allows for easy conversation while paddling side-by-side.
Can we combine SUP with eFoil clinic and Expedition Robinson activity?
Yes! This is our most popular corporate option. We can set up a “Basecamp” some of the group explores on SUPs while the others go on the eFoils and the rest can do Expedition Robinson activity. It ensures everyone is having fun the entire time.
Do you offer corporate packages?
Yes! We specialize in corporate offsites and team-building events. Contact us for custom quotes based on your group size. We offer food and beverage packages to enjoy with your group after the activities.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Compared to many other water sports, eFoiling is less affected by weather conditions. Since it doesn’t rely on wind or waves, sessions can usually continue even if the weather isn’t ideal. That said, safety is always our top priority—if conditions aren’t suitable for activities, we’ll reschedule your lesson at no extra cost.
What is your cancellation policy?
Customers may cancel or modify their booking up to 24 hours before the scheduled date and time by contacting Flying Fish School via email (in writing) or through the app. If changes are made within 24 hours, the booking will be converted into a credit that can be used at a later date, and these credits are transferable. Cancellations within 24 hours result in the loss of the lesson fee. No refunds will be issued if fewer participants attend than originally booked.
